Mecklenburg County approves resolution recognizing 'Month of Ramadan'

The vote on recognition of Ramadan in Mecklenburg County was heavily discussed, but eventually approved 6-3.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners adopted a resolution Tuesday evening agreeing to recognize the month from May 26th to June 24th as "The Month of Ramadan."

According to the proclamation, Ramadan is a sacred time in the Muslim faith that encourages fasting, prayer, reflection and, "Reminds us that Islam has always been a part of America."

Mecklenburg County Commissioner Jim Puckett released a statement in opposition to the resolution, saying, "This isn’t support of Muslims, it is support of a religious event."

The resolution was among many items discussed by the County Board of Commissioners Tuesday evening. The agenda item was initially pushed back in the scheduled, but was brought back towards the first items discussed.
