Nurse accused of helping inmate escape to have sex

A Chester County nurse was charged with having a sexual relationship with an inmate that police said she helped escape prison on three occasions.

CHESTER, S.C. -- A nurse is accused of helping an inmate escape from a detention center to have sex on several occasions.

The Chester County Sheriff's Office says they received an email staying an incident between an inmate at the Chester County Detention Center and a contract employee had occurred.

Upon investigation, they discovered Katherine Heckman, 38, a nurse, helped Sean Lyles, 33, escape the detention center on three separate occasions to have sex. Heckman was also a paramedic with Chester County EMS, but county leaders said she's now on administrative leave.

NBC Charlotte went to Heckman's house to get her side of the story, but no one answered the door. Chester County Sheriff Alex Underwood declined an on-camera interview.

Heckman was charged with first-degree sexual misconduct with an inmate and escape/aiding escape from prison. Lyles was charged with two counts of escape, and attempted escape. He was already serving time for multiple burglary charges.

The incident remains under investigation.
