Person dies suddenly while being arrested Thursday night

WADESBORO, N.C. -- The SBI is investigating after a person died while being taken into custody Thursday night in Anson County.

At about 11 p.m. Probation and Parol Officer William Torrence was attempting to locate and arrest Lamont Darryl Perry for a probation violation related to an assault on a female charge. 

Perry was found at his girlfriend's house in Wadesboro. He fled the residence but was shortly located in a wooded area.

Torrence was handcuffing Perry when he saw Perry had sustained a leg injury. Medic was called to the scene and rendered aid to Perry. 

According to the SBI, Perry was talking when Medic was rendering aid, however, he suddenly became unresponsive and passed away. 

The SBI says there was no indication that a gun or taser was used. 

The cause of death is pending an autopsy and no weapon was located on the scene.

The SBI is asking anyone with information or who may have been in the area of Sykes Drive around 11:00 pm to contact the SBI at 704-454-5264.
