STANLEY, N.C. -- Authorities in Lincoln County are warning residents after a raccoon tested positive for rabies.
Sunday, Animal Control officers responded to the 7600 block of Old Plank Road in Stanley after receiving reports about a raccoon fighting with a dog.
The animal was retrieved and sent off to the North Carolina Laboratory of Public Health where it tested positive for rabies.
Animal Services says this is the first rabies case in Lincoln County in 2016, but 2015 had four cases.
Residents are urged to get dogs, cats and ferrets vaccinated, as it is required by law.
