Elon suspends Pi Kappa Phi fraternity until Jan. 2017

Elon, NC - A new statement released from Elon University on Saturday says the school has suspended its chapter of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity after a campus investigation determined that new members were hazed during the spring pledge period.

Elon has closed the fraternity on Tuesday, March 17, according to the statement from the University.

The university also reports that the chapter hosted an unapproved party off-campus with alcohol.

The first reports of the university investigating the fraternity for hazing came on February 13th.

Elon says although there was no evidence of physical injury or forced alcohol consumption, the fraternity's activities violated the university's and national fraternity's policies.

The university also said that at the time of the reported hazing and unapproved party, the fraternity was on social probation for prior violations of the Elon University Honor Code.

Elon says the decision to remove Pi Kappa Phi until spring of 2017 comes from a pattern of Elon Honor Code violations by the fraternity over several years. The university says that student-safety and well-being are the administration's top concern.
