Sidewalk dedicated where two brothers died

Kadrian Pendergrass and his brother Jeremy Brewton were hit and killed walking down West Tyvola Road with their dad in 2012.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – City leaders dedicated a new sidewalk project in west Charlotte Tuesday, where two young brothers died in 2012. They also planted a tree at the intersection near where Kadrien Pendergrass and Jeremy Brewton were hit by a box truck as they walked down the street with their father.

"This will hopefully create a much safer environment for future generations," said Charlotte City Councilwoman LaWana Mayfield.

Now a sidewalk stretches more than a third of a mile down West Tyvola Road, in between West Boulevard and Old Steele Creek Road.

Mayfield said similar projects usually take five to seven years from planning to completion. This project only took two years. Mayfield credited neighborhood cooperation and additional funds that were freed up from another project.
