Duke Energy: Snake caused widespread power outages in Concord

More than 12,000 people in Concord without power.

CONCORD, N.C. -- Over 12,000 people lost power in Concord Sunday after officials say a fire at a Duke Energy delivery point damaged equipment.

According to Duke Energy's officials, the outage was caused by a black snake that caused damage in the City of Concord's substation.

The initial outage was restored around 2 a.m. Officials say most of those affected by the first outage again lost power when the backup equipment failed.

According to Duke Energy, crews mare doing work in the Carolinas to retrofit 400,000 transformers with new technology to prevent animal interference and lightning strikes.

Officials said it may be several hours before power is fully restored.
