Mexican immigrants worry as Hurricane John threatens Vera Cruz 11:04 PM
11:04 PM EDT on Thursday, August 31, 2006
While most of the east coast is tracking Ernesto, another major hurricane is swirling off Mexico's west coast.
That storm is cause for concern for many in the area's Hispanic immigrant community.
With the weakening of hurricane Ernesto, the most gripping pictures beaming throughout the world are from hurricane John, churning through the Pacific Ocean, and bearing down on the western coast of Mexico.
The category 4 storm has caused warnings in the state of Vera Cruz, on the eastern coast. Many of Charlotte's Mexican immigrants are from Vera Cruz.
On charlotte's Spanish-speaking airwaves, caller after caller to radio Lider 1030 AM asked about hurricane John.
Many of the immigrants making the calls are worried about their families back home, and so – coincidentally - is their disc jockey. He goes by "Punch," and for part of his life, he called Vera Cruz home.
"It effects their houses, many of the houses in Vera Cruz aren't built well," said Punch.
Punch said he believes the majority of Charlotte's Mexican immigrants are also from Vera Cruz.
Hurricane John was still off Mexico's western coast early Thursday, and the mega storm has already dumped over a foot of water on Acapulco - flooding streets there.
The hurricane is expected to make a direct hit on the western Baja Peninsula.
Punch said he and his callers can only keep their eyes on the storm in hopes that the country they still call home will be spared.
