The Charlotte community is coming together this weekend to give homeless families a place to live. Volunteers are working on the Hall House to help convert the building into a shelter. The building sits empty on North Tryon Street now, but later this year organizers say it will provide shelter for 100 homeless families.

Volunteers started working on the building Friday and will continue through the weekend. Workers are cleaning, painting and moving furniture .

The Salvation Army and the Charlotte Housing Authority asked the city to pay for the project because they were running out of space at the other shelters due to a growing need. The grant for $160,000 is being funded by the CHA, the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County and the Critical Need Response Fund, as well as private charitable donations. The building is designed to give families temporary shelter until they can move into homes on their own.

Organizers hope to have the building open in June.
