Children mourning after mother killed

GASTONIA, N.C. -- Gastonia police still haven't made an arrest in the shooting death of a single mother of two.

"It's heartbreaking," said Shanika Roberts, the next door neighbor to Michelle Costner.

Costner, 37, was shot and killed in her home, allegedly by an intruder who forced his way inside at gunpoint Wednesday night.

Costner's children were home at the time.

Her son, CJ Withers, says the man demanded money from his mother's wallet. When Withers went to the back of the house to get the wallet, he says, shots were fired.

"When we heard it, we looked at each other and ran in there. All she could say was, 'Call an ambulance,'" Costner's daughter, Brittany Withers, told NewsChannel 36.

"I hope they find whoever did that to my mom," said CJ Withers.

Costner's family says the only reason they can think someone may have targeted her was possibly for robbery. Police say they are investigating all possibilities.

"She didn't deserve it," Costner's father, Allen, tearfully told NewsChannel 36. "They left two lovely kids without a mama. It's so sad."

Anyone with information that could help solve this case is asked to call Gastonia Police Detectives at (704) 866-6880 or Crime Stoppers at (704) 861-8000. Crime Stoppers pays up to $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest.
