CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have released surveillance photos of a man suspected of raping a mentally handicapped woman.

Police say the man followed the 52-year-old woman off a CATS bus when it stopped at Harvest Lane and Sharon Lakes Road.

The man allegedly followed the woman home, forced his way inside her house and sexually assaulted her. Police say the man also stole cash from the woman's wallet.

In the surveillance photos, the man is seen wearing plaid shorts, a red Adidas sweatshirt and a white baseball cap.

Police say the man was last spotted on tape boarding a bus at the Old Pineville station.

The assault happened at about 5 p.m. on Dec. 26. Police have not said why it took two weeks to release the surveillance photos.

Anyone who recognizes the man should call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
