Family frustrated with home break-ins
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A Dilworth family says their home has been burglarized three times in six months. The most recent break-in happened Monday.
"We were just defeated. The police say, 'You've done everything right,'" said Magaux Karagosian.
"We can't believe they made their way back to the neighborhood here. We can't believe they pretty much did the exact same thing," said Adam Karagosian.
The family says each time the burglars kicked in the carport door. The first burglary happened June 23.
"These guys were in and out in two minutes -- not afraid of the alarm, probably not afraid of going to jail," Adam said.
His wife says they wonder why they keep being targeted.
"We also talked about whether our house was a target or whether we, personally, were targets, and that's not a good feeling to have," Magaux said.
The Karagosians have an alarm and followed all of the advice given by police, including keeping blinds and curtains closed. They have lived in the house for two years and love it, but they are questioning if it's worth it.
"If we stay here, what do we have to do to make ourselves even safer?" Adam said. "I don't want to make this place a fortress."
On Thursday, the couple got some of their stolen jewelry back. Police say an observant neighbor reported a suspicious car. Officers stopped the vehicle, arrested three men and found the jewelry.
But those men have not been charged with the break-in yet.
The family is concerned about the kind of justice they will get because they believe the suspects are repeat offenders.
"The fact they were potentially able to identify who it was that broke into our house and knew he was out on the streets, it's amazing that we are all wasting our time, our energy and emotions over something that sounds like could have easily been prevented," Magaux said.
The Karagosians say they would like to see a stop to the revolving criminal justice door.
