Charlotte-area cable bills rising for many

By Adam Bell | Charlotte Observer

CHARLOTTE, N.C.-- Time Warner Cable is raising its rates again for many Charlotte area customers, the company said today.

The changes will start in February, with rates rising from 4 to 9 percent for certain services.

About 60 percent of customers in the region will not see the price hikes right away because they have discounted bundle packages or other promotions, spokeswoman Melissa Buscher said. Their bills would change once the promotions expire.

Time Warner has about 400,000 cable, phone and Internet services customers in the region.

Service changes include: basic, from $11 to $12; standard, from $51.95 to $54.95; DigiPic 1000, from $67.75 to $71.95, DigiPic 2000, from $85.75 to $89.95 and DigiPic 4000, from $95.75 to $99.95.

Buscher said programming costs for sports and broadcast networks continues to drive costs, as does investing in infrastructure.

Two weeks ago, Time Warner and Viacom faced off in a high-profile fight over fee increases for Viacom channels such as Nickelodeon and Comedy Central. A last minute-deal prevented 19 channels from going dark for Time Warner customers.

“We're doing everything we can to keep costs down,” Buscher said. “As we've seen recently (with Viacom,) it's a challenge.”

The Charlotte area rates were determined before the Viacom dispute, she added.
