A Charlotte man is demanding answers from the York Memorial Park cemetery, after he says they sold a plot of land his mother had previously purchased.

Timothy Harden says several years ago his mother bought a specific plot in the cemetery so she could be buried next to her husband, who died in 1993. When Harden’s mother Verna died two years ago, a stranger was already buried in that spot.

“I had a paid-in-full receipt, and they were telling me at that time there was somebody already buried there,” Harden said.

The family got that news the night before they were to bury their mother. As a temporary measure, Verna Harden was placed in a mausoleum, 200 yards from her husband. The family is angry with the cemetery, and is suing, demanding that they make it right.

“I don’t know of anyone who has to live through burying their father twice or their mother twice, but this is an incomplete thing, and it can’t stay like this,” Harden said.
