Employer in construction accident cited before 1:43 PM
01:43 PM EST on Friday, February 16, 2007
The subcontractor that employed the five workers injured in a construction accident Thursday was cited last month for not having adequate safety measures in place, according to the North Carolina Department of Labor.
Five workers were hospitalized Thursday morning after the roof of a porch on a home under construction collapsed. They fell roughly 40 feet.
Three of the workers have since been released from the hospital, and the other two are in fair condition and are expected to make a full recovery.
Moni Davier Flores, Rolando Gonzalez, Emillo Gomez, Oscar Arturo Amador, and Marcos Vichaz work for Andres Gavarrette Construction of Waxhaw.
After an inspection in January, Gavarrette Construction was issued two citations – one for not having eye and face protection equipment, and another for not having guardrails, a safety net system or personal fall arrest system for employees working more than six feet above ground.
The company was ordered to pay a $600 penalty, but after it requested an informal settlement, the fine was reduced to $400, according to the Department of Labor.
The accident happened just before 10 a.m. Thursday in the 9400 block of Hampton Oaks Lane.
