CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The grandson of a 92-year-old woman who was stabbed to death is speaking out for the first time.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say Mildred Clontz was attacked and robbed at her home on Knickerbocker Drive Sunday evening, near East Mecklenburg High School. She died Monday morning at Carolinas Medical Center. Her killer is still on the run.
“If a 92-year old woman, if her life is worth less than the contents of her purse, nobody is safe, because this person has no value of a human life,” said Tim Clontz, Mildred Clontz’s grandson.
Clontz’s brother said she had just come home from church when the man attacked her, stealing her purse containing cash and credit cards.
“As she was opening her door, the attacker pushed her inside the house and went in and did his knife work. Evidently he was close by. She didn't know he was there as she opened the door,” said Roy Preslar, Clontz’ brother.
The only peace the family feels right now is knowing the last person Clontz saw was not her killer.
She managed to call 911 and her son after the attack.
“The last faces she saw were people who loved her and were trying to help her. I do thank God for that,” said Tim Clontz.
Since she's passed, her grandson has learned a side to his grandmother he never knew.
“We come here and we find out from the pastor that she was helping out cooking, she was helping out with underprivileged kids. This woman is 92 years old. Where does she get all this energy?”
As police continue to search for Clontz’s killer, her grandson says an arrest will never give him closure.
“I miss her. I want her back.”
Funeral services for Mildred Clontz will be held at Midwood Baptist Church on Wednesday afternoon. Police are not releasing details about the suspect.
