Sex toy parties gaining popularity in Charlotte 2:20 PM
02:20 PM EDT on Friday, May 2, 2008
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- More and more women are talking sex at a very unique kind of house party.
"I'd say within 15 minutes everybody's laughing, carrying on and just getting involved in what I'm talking about," said Danette White, a Pure Romance consultant.
So what is she talking about?
"Now I want to talk about coochie! Does anybody love their coochie as much as I do?" White said at a recent party.
"My favorite product is the coochie cream," one woman at the party said. "It is a wonderful shaving cream."
That product is among the tamer items at the party.
"A lot of our toys are waterproof," White said. "When you turn this on you have seven speeds."
The women who attend the Pure Romance parties are from all walks of life.
"I am an office manager," said one woman.
"I work at a credit union," said another.
"I'm a childcare teacher," said another.
Some are single, some married. Most of them are mothers.
"It's kind of like attending a Tupperware party, but just not quite," one woman said.
At the parties, White presents sexual products that the women can purchase.
"What I want to show you is the sex sling, which is going to help you to stimulate the G spot," White explained.
White said she started as a Pure Romance consultant eight years ago when she was looking for a second job.
"I was looking into Mary Kay," she said.
But White decided there was a different way to make women feel better.
"I just ended up making a career out of it," she said.
White is booked for house parties every Friday and Saturday night -- 100 parties a year in the Charlotte area.
The parties and the talk, she says, have changed over the years.
"It has changed tremendously. I think we're coming out of that shell," White said.
"I think it's society getting a little more open to everything," a woman said.
"A lot more open than they were when I was growing up, a whole lot more," said a woman who attended the party with her daughter. "There's a lot I apparently don't know about my own self."
White said that is what Pure Romance is all about -- lessons and laughter.
"Most women don't know a lot about their own bodies," she said.
"We have a good time," a partygoer said. "We're just laid back, ladies night out, a night to have fun, and just have a really good time with your girlfriends, and learn and educate yourself about sex as well."
