CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Spiderman wannabes, Star War enthusiasts and comic book lovers unite -- there’s a new way to find love.
Joyce Dales started SweetOnGeeks.com with her husband. It’s an online dating site geared towards geeks.
“You don’t have to be a geek. You can be a geek appreciator,” said Dales.
Dales met her husband on Match.com but this site is for more of a specialized group.
“If you come to our site, you’re going to shine your little geek light real bright,” she said. “I prefer geek love rather than regular love because I feel understood and accepted for who I am."
Sweet On Geeks is also organizing singles nights around the country, including at Heroes Comic Book Store in Charlotte.
Patrick Power came to the singles night from Greenville.
“There’s a geek inside everybody. I’m a rock and roll geek. I’m a sci-fi geek. I’m a horror geek. There are NASCAR geeks. There are Elvis geeks,” he said.
He says it's more about finding people with similar interests. Sarah Deaton feels the same way.
“I like comic books. I like to play video games. I want to meet someone who’s into the same stuff as I am," she said.
Deaton created a profile after being bored with people she met on other sites.
“I like to discuss the stuff I love with the person I’m with,” she said.
As for the term "geeky," Dales says it is something to embrace.
“Most of us have come to accept it. It's kind of a badge of pride,” she said.
Power says if you’re looking for love try out your fellow geek.
“Being a geek is not a bad thing, he said. ”Michael Jordan makes a ton of money but look at Microsoft. Who’s making more money?"
