Trucker stabbed in robbery attempt at rest stop 10:38 AM

10:38 AM EDT on Friday, May 9, 2008

By STEVE LYTTLE / The Charlotte Observer

Authorities in Cleveland County are looking for two suspects this morning after an apparent attempted robbery on Interstate 85 that left a truck driver injured.

It happened about 10:15 p.m. Thursday at the North Carolina welcome station on northbound I-85 in Cleveland County, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.

A truck driver was outside his vehicle, checking the tires, when a silver-colored SUV pulled up next to him. A man got out of the passenger's side of the vehicle and attempted to rob him at gunpoint. The two men got into a fight, and the trucker was stabbed in the leg during the battle.

The suspect then got back into the SUV, which was driven by another man, and fled.

Troopers say they don't believe the trucker's injuries are life-threatening.
