Pricey tickets improve players' odds

A new North Carolina Education Lottery game kicked off Friday.

The “Sizzlin’ Millionaire Raffle” tickets will sell for $20. The state claims the raffle offers the best odds to win a million bucks -- one in 125,000 will win.

Only 500,000 tickets are available for purchase. Four people will win the top prize and become a millionaire.

Deonna Pagan bought her ticket early this morning.

“I was happy to give up $20 and the odds are better,” said Deonna Pagan.

North Carolina Education Lottery Spokeswoman Alice Garland said she is pleased by the first day of sales. As of this afternoon, people throughout the state purchased more than 40,000 tickets.

Despite the brisk sales, most lottery players we spoke with were not willing to buy a $20 raffle ticket.

“If I have to play $20, no. Who wants to give up $20 and you still don't win anything?” said Sommer Dickerson.

“That's $20 I could use to feed my son and there's nothing guaranteeing I'm going to win that million dollars,” said Tessia Raymond.

We did find a few people who said they planned to buy a ticket, but most didn't have $20 on hand. You cannot put the price of the lottery ticket on your credit card. The drawing will take place July 4.

The “Sizzlin’ Millionaire Raffle” is the fifth play style launched so far. Lottery officials hope it will attract players who have not been drawn to the lottery before.
