CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A strong line of storms moved through the metro area on Sunday evening, bringing reports of golf-ball sized hail and a tornado touchdown in Lincoln County.

Much of the region was under a tornado watch until 8 p.m. Tornado warnings popped up across the Piedmont, starting in Lincoln County where many viewers snapped photos of a funnel cloud. The storm moved into northern Mecklenburg and Cabarrus counties, where large hail was reported. Photos showed hail covering yards and roadways.

WCNC's Michelle Boudin was driving on Interstate 77 around 5:30 p.m. and reported golf-ball size hail. She was forced to pull over and take cover in a nearby restaurant.

Lincoln County emergency officials also reported a tornado touchdown; there are not yet any reports of injuries. A spotter also reported seeing a funnel cloud near the Lincoln County airport and sent in a photo of large hail.

The storms moved into Stanly County, where viewers also reported seeing a funnel cloud near Albemarle.

Strong and severe thunderstorms will slowly move past the area with strong winds moving in Sunday night. Additional storms are firing up as the cold front sweeps across the state.

Some of these storms could produce hail and strong gusty winds. The winds will really howl and could bring down trees and limbs overnight.

High wind warnings are up for the mountains and foothills overnight and early Monday. Those winds will bring in cooler and drier air overnight and into Monday.
