Mother says she tried to stop him

GASTONIA, N.C. -- A Gaston County man faces assault with a deadly weapon charges for allegedly stabbing his son.

Gastonia police say it happened this morning shortly before 6 a.m. on Webb Street, just one block off Franklin Boulevard in Gastonia. Police say they received a stabbing call and when they arrived on the scene they saw 28-year-old Michael Swain Huffman on the ground bleeding.

Sgt. Jimmy West of the Gastonia Police department said "there was a lot of blood everywhere."

Police say they recovered what appeared to be a hatchet with blood near the crime scene.

April Huffman said her ex-husband Michael Leroy Huffman got into an argument with their son Michael Swain Huffman about coming over to the house.

"The landlord said we would be evicted if he kept coming over here," said an upset April Huffman. "I tried to stop him from hurting my son but he just pushed me out of the way… into a door and reached around me and stabbed him."

Police say the younger Huffman was stabbed multiple times.

Huffman was transported to Carolinas Medical Center and he is still in the emergency room.

Michael Leroy Huffman was arrested on assault with a deadly weapon charge.
