CONCORD, N.C. -- On the eve to the first big race since fuel prices surpassed $3.50 a gallon, Cabarrus County leaders worry the pinch could take its toll on the local economy.
"Our concern is that people may or may not be deciding to make the trip because gas prices are at $3.75," said Sharon Campbell of the visitors’ bureau.
About 90 percent of race fans travel more than 75 miles to get to Lowe’s Motor Speedway.
Each big race accounts for about $100 million to the local economy.
"Filled it up last week," said Bob Sessions of his Winnebago. "It was over $250. It’s probably more now."
Ticket sales for the All-Star Race Saturday are on track, according to Lowe’s Motor Speedway officials. Ticket numbers for the Coca-Cola 600 continue to lag compared to last year.
"They say, 'well, we have to afford to get our tickets and our gas,'" said merchandise salesperson Cecil Wilkerson. "They are kind of backing off of the merchandise."
"We're going watch very closely and monitor how those folks are spending," Campbell added.
To make up for the added fuel expense, some race fans plan to cut back on eating at restaurants and other shopping.
"If I look at a souvenir, I might think twice about it whether I need it or not,” said Sessions, who traveled from Virginia.
