CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A 12-year-old girl from the Ballantyne area was taken to the emergency room Monday night after being bitten by a poisonous snake.

The girl is expected to be OK. Witnesses say she was walking through a neighbor's yard on her way home when she was bitten on the ankle by a 1-foot-long copperhead snake.

She ran home to her parents, both of whom are doctors. They took her to Carolinas Medical Center - Pineville.

Emergency crews say the snake was killed, and animal control officers took it away.
