Myers Park sinkhole closes Selwyn Avenue
03:30 PM EDT on Wednesday, June 10, 2009
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Crews are working to fix a sinkhole along Selwyn Avenue in Myers Park after a water pipe burst on Tuesday.
The sinkhole formed at the intersection of Selwyn and Wellesley right in front of Queens University. It’s a corner one Charlotte woman won't soon forget.
"I'm just sitting at the stop sign and all of sudden my car goes down and I'm thinking OK, do I have a flat tire?" said Samantha Williams. "So I immediately get out of the car and I'm like oh God it's a sinkhole!"
Williams was on her way to her niece's dance recital at Queens University. The hole is much larger now, but Williams said when she first got out of her car the hole was maybe half its size.
Police tell us it doubled within an hour and it wasn't hard for anyone passing by or standing around to hear the rush of the water from the broken pipe below the surface.
"But when I got out and went on the other side of the street, there it sounded like a bunch of alligators. Everyone was like oh my God, what's in there?" Williams said laughing.
As of 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, the road was still closed to traffic. Officials said the road would be repaved and open sometime after 6 p.m.
