CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Dallas Cowboy Chris Canty is back at his alma mater, Charlotte Latin.
This week he’s holding his own Camp of Champions at the same school that started his football career, and he's happy to be back home and bring some of his teammates with him.
“You know how big Chris is? He's like 6''7" 360 pounds. If he says, 'Demarcus, you're coming to our camp today.' I'm like, 'OK, I'll be there,'” said Dallas Linebacker Demarcus Ware, ready to help Canty’s Camp of Champions
“I've always wanted to do a camp in Charlotte,” said Canty as he talked to us prior to camp. “This is my community.”
The camp is a family affair. Canty worked with his brother Joe to get community support, sponsors and a slew of Cowboys to come help Charlotte kids.
“So the guys can see it's not just me, but it's a lot of people who've been able to achieve this level of success,” he said.
Bringing in the big players like Ware was part of Canty's plan to make his camp stand out.
“I wanted to put positive influences in front of the kids,” he said. “I wanted the guys to be awestruck.”
But it's more than just rubbing elbows with the pros -- Canty wants the kids to be inspired.
“When you talk about teamwork, leadership, competitive drive, to be the best, it doesn't get better than sports,” he said.
And for Canty, it doesn't get much better than coming home to Charlotte.
“The people, the good ole southern hospitality. There's no place like home,” he said.
Canty and his brother are planning on bringing the camp to Charlotte every year. The camp this year is for rising third through ninth-graders.
They're already looking for sponsors for 2009. For more information, visit www.chriscanty99.com.
