Family attacked while house-sitting

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Gunmen kicked in the door of a Charlotte home on Thursday, terrorizing a family, including a 6-month-old baby.

It happened in the Montclaire South neighborhood just off of Archdale.

A man and his girlfriend, who are from New York, told police they were house-sitting for friends when three men burst through the back door, guns blazing.

The woman managed to run to a neighbor's for safety, carrying her baby in her arms.

"She said they said to him, 'Tell us where it is.' And they put the gun to her head and said, 'We'll shoot her,'" described neighbor Rick Hannon.

Instead they reportedly shot her boyfriend five times in the legs. Neighbors say the boyfriend came out of the house, screaming for help.

They say he walked about 150 feet to a neighbor's house and then collapsed on the porch.

"My wife went to the front door, told me to call 911, saying somebody's been shot and there was a gentleman on the porch. He looked like he'd been stabbed and shot," Hannon said.

He says the man told him he’d also been pistol-whipped and beaten.

"He was like he was dumbfounded at what happened because they were house-sitting the house for someone," Hannon said.

Police say this appears to be a robbery and does not appear to be random. The three suspects are still on the loose.

The man who was shot underwent surgery at Carolinas Medical Center late Thursday night. His injuries were not life-threatening.
