CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The fourth of July was a busy night for Charlotte-Mecklenburg police after a string of shootings in Charlotte. Officers tell WCNC five people were shot within a two hour time span leaving one person dead and another injured.

The deadly shooting happened around 11 p.m. on Georgtown Drive in the Hidden Valley neighborhood of Charlotte. Police say 35-year-old Calvin Eugene Thompson died in the overnight hours and 50-year-old Bobby Fluitt was treated for a non-life threatening injury. Officers from the North Tryon division responded and after interviewing witnesses in the neighborhood, they believe the two men got into an argument right before the shooting. Both men were taken to the emergency room at Carolinas Medical Center where Thompson died a short time later.

Police have arrested William Daniel Thomas and charged him with Thompson's murder.

About 30 minutes after that shooting, investigators say a man and woman were shot inside a car on Wallace Road in east Charlotte. Police say the couple ended up crashing the car and slamming into a light post on Independence Boulevard Saturday night. The victims' injuries are non life threatening.

And police say, another person was shot on east W.T. Harris Boulevard around 2 a.m. Saturday. Police have released few details about that incident.
