Big Brother installed in your car 4:34 PM
Ever felt like you're being watched? Employees of some local companies are. But owners say it's good for business.04:34 PM EDT on Friday, July 6, 2007
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Tripp Moore is the area general manager for Two Men in a Truck. He says, “We can see every movement of that vehicle throughout the day. It's real time.... it's updated. It's an amazing system."
"It" is GPS, and every Two Men in a Truck vehicle in the Charlotte area is installed with one so managers like Moore can monitor their every move from a computer screen.
"We know that the truck has driven exactly 14 miles from point A to point B. It tells us the time that they stopped and this is their fuel. They stopped five minutes to get fuel this morning. They stopped for 13 seconds which was probably a stop light. That's how exact it is," Moore said.
The system is created by Navtrak, Inc. The company opened a local office a little over a year ago. Wes Jones is a local account executive for Navtrak. He said the idea is catching on fast.
"Business has been tremendous. We started with no real customers in the Charlotte area. We had a couple in Raleigh, but we decided to open up in Charlotte market because it's a growing city. We now have over 600 vehicles running over the Charlotte, North and South Carolina area and we're growing everyday," Jones states.
But how do employees feel about being watched so closely?
"At first they were a little suspect because they thought it was Big Brother watching at all times... and it is," said Moore.
If you're in the truck, there's no doubt you're being watched. But with the antenna on the roof and the evidence, such as wires, hidden behind the dashboard, the issue is out of sight and becomes out of mind.
"There are 24 satellites in the sky. With that antenna, satellites are constantly taking information from the mobile manager in terms of where the vehicle is, how fast it's going where he's stopped at," Jones explains
Moore said the "overall" goal is not to keep an eye on workers, but running a more efficient business. He says, "If we can guarantee that we know the position of every vehicle at every point 24 hours a day it's very important and a security feature for the customer."
