Radio Lider signs off 7:21 AM
07:21 AM EDT on Monday, July 7, 2008
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte's first Spanish radio station is no longer on the air. Radio Lider, which aired on 1030 AM, stopped programming Saturday night.
The station was not able to reach a financial agreement with the company that provided its signal. The talk and information station began 14 years ago.
Staffers like Jorge Lozano say it provided an important public service to the hispanic community.
"A lot of the sorrow that we feel today, it comes mostly from that, that link to the community is lost," said Lozano. He adds, "we wish there was a way to continue that, and we're working on that."
The station's best-known host -- Aura Maria Posse -- says she is looking into doing a web-based broadcast and continuing community work.
