06:47 AM EDT on Tuesday, July 22, 2008
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Severe thunderstorms knocked down trees and damaged buildings in Rowan County on Monday evening.
Rowan Emergency Services Director Frank Thomason said dispatch received the first call of trees down at about 6:30 p.m. on Mountain View Road off Goodnight Road.
The county was under a severe thunderstorm warning at the time.
Thomason said calls from that area continued coming in, reporting trees down, outbuildings destroyed and homes damaged.
Thomason said the line of storms moved southwest through the county. The last damage report was from the Grove Supply Company on Main Street in China Grove. Residents reported that the building, which is brick, collapsed.
No injuries were reported.
Duke Energy said there were more than 1,400 power outages in Rowan County, with most of the outages concentrated in the China Grove and Landis areas.
Thomason said that some witnesses had reported seeing a tornado in the area.
Meteorologists from the National Weather Service will meet with Thomason Tuesday morning to determine if a tornado is to blame for the damage.
