CHESTERFIELD, S.C. -- An off-duty Chesterfield County sheriff's department sergeant was killed Wednesday night in a head-on crash in that South Carolina county.

Sgt. Daryl Quick

The crash happened about 6:30 p.m. on U.S. 1 near Middendorf Road. That is near the town of Patrick, north of McBee.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, a car collided with a pickup truck on the roadway. The collision happened during a time when heavy thunderstorms were threatening the area, but it is not clear if it was stormy at the time of the wreck.

The highway patrol has not said which vehicle crossed the center of the road.

The driver of the pickup truck was seriously injured and hospitalized in Hartsville, S.C.

The highway patrol has not released the identity of the driver of the car, who was killed. But two South Carolina newspapers have identified him as Daryl Quick, 42, of Cheraw, S.C.
