Man shoots deputy, self during standoff

INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. -- What started as a fight at a home in Indian Trail ended with a four-hour long standoff.

Union County sheriff's deputies received a call shortly before 5 a.m. Thursday about a domestic dispute at a home on Fincher Road off of Waxhaw-Indian Trail Road.
They said Craig Gibson was holding his girlfriend hostage.

Deputies say that she got away but Gibson stayed inside the home, and then fired at deputies.

One of the bullets grazed Cpl. Todd Braswell -- a 22-year veteran of the Union County Sheriff’s Office -- in the shoulder.

"It's just like a member of your family being hurt, you worry about him,” said Sheriff Eddie Cathey.

Braswell was treated and released from the hospital.

Investigators negotiated with Gibson for hours until they heard a shot inside the home.

A robotic camera brought into the home revealed that Gibson was lying in a hallway and had apparently shot himself.

Gibson was taken to Carolinas Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition.

He has a criminal record in Mecklenburg County, including as a registered sex offender.
