Boyfriend charged in baby's beating

LANCASTER, S.C. -- Police in Lancaster are blaming a man for putting his girlfriend's baby into the intensive care unit.

Investigators say the 1-month-old girl has bleeding on the brain.

The police report describes how the baby was rushed to the hospital with bruises on her arms and back, cuts on her face, and blood on her clothes.

"It's so sad because she's so little," says neighbor Patricia McCoy.

Watching from across the street, McCoy says it took her breath away when she saw her neighbor's baby carried out by EMS and rushed away.

"I just was sitting on the porch and saw when the ambulance came," says McCoy. "Any mother that goes through something like that, I hate it for them because children are a gift of life."

Herself a mother of two, McCoy was shocked to see what happened next.

"I was sitting here when they locked him up," explains McCoy.

She saw her neighbor's live-in boyfriend cuffed and arrested. William Burdick, 27, is charged with inflicting great bodily harm on a child.

Police were called to the home on York Street Tuesday after a caller reported someone was running around the home. When officers got there, the 22-year-old mother told officers she was concerned about the bruises and cuts she found on her infant daughter after her boyfriend was babysitting that afternoon.

"I just pray for her that's all I can do," says McCoy.

Investigators say Burdick admitted he may have been too rough when picking up the baby.

"We leave it in the Lord's hands," adds McCoy.

Burdick was denied bond in this case. Police also found out Burdick is a registered sex offender in New York and he could face more charges for not registering in Lancaster County.
