Volunteers needed to care for hundreds of rescued pets
08:35 PM EDT on Friday, August 29, 2008
DENVER, N.C. -- Animal aid groups are asking for volunteers and supplies to help care for the nearly 400 animals confiscated this week from a home in Lincoln County.
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has asked people willing to donate time or pet care items to come by the temporary shelter in Denver starting today.
Lincoln County officials took the animals -- many of them sick and malnourished -- from the home of Vicki and Michael Rauch on Tuesday.
They're being temporarily housed in the abandoned R-ANELL factory, which is across the street from a BB&T bank located at 3560 N. Highway 16 in Denver. Volunteers are asked to stop by between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. to help out. Look for an open gate and a check-in point.
Seized animals include dogs, cats, rodents, horses, a llama, birds, goats and more. The animal groups need help care for the pets for the next two to four weeks until they can be moved into foster care or a permanent home.
The caretakers are also in need of supplies, including unopened dog and cat food, litter, towels, paper towels, leashes, collars, bedding for pets and clean-up supplies.
