Charlotte Red Cross opening shelter for Gustav victims

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The American Red Cross Greater Carolinas Chapter will open a shelter Tuesday to accommodate evacuees fleeing Hurricane Gustav in the Gulf Coast.

They estimate more than 30 need assistance.

CEO Pamela Jefsen says the people in the Charlotte area are here for a variety of reasons. One family arrived Monday night because they’d traveled to North Carolina for a wedding and couldn’t go home.

The shelter will be set up at Victory Christian Center at 7228 Old Pineville Road in Charlotte. It opens Tuesday at noon.

This is a special challenge for the local Red Cross because volunteers are still busy with victims of the flooding in North Carolina last week. It’s made even more complicated by Hurricane Hanna, which could hit the Piedmont region.

“The third ball in the air is Hannah,” Jefsen says, “and we're not sure what's happening with that, but we need to make sure we are ready to roll when needed.”

Volunteers will start setting up the shelter for Gustav evacuees Tuesday morning. The Red Cross is also assembling teams of local volunteers to head south to Louisiana.
