Father worries about son's security

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A ninth grader was robbed Monday while waiting for his school bus.

It happened off Ventura Way at the intersection of Tom Hunter Road.

He's just a freshman at Mallard Creek High, but on Monday, 14-year-old Isaiah Thomas learned a tough lesson in life.

Crime can happen to anyone - at any age - at any time.

"I’m OK. I’m just shaken up about it though," he told NewsChannel 36.

Isaiah was simply waiting for Bus 1288 at his stop around 6:15 a.m. when he was suddenly confronted by two young men with a gun.

He found himself fearing for his life.

"He took my MP3 player out of my hand and another guy came up and put a gun to my waist. So, I gave them my money and stuff and I was scared so I just did what they told me," Thomas explained.

"Just going to school. You don't imagine someone getting robbed at a school bus stop," his father Charles Walters said.

The crooks only got away with a couple of dollars from Isaiah's wallet but his dad worries they took something far more precious - his son's innocence and sense of security.

"He's 14. What are you going to get from a 14-year-old?" he asked.

The robbers took off on foot and ran toward the Hidden Valley neighborhood. No one has been arrested so far. Isaiah is thinking of changing schools or at least the way he gets to school. In the meantime, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools say they’ve beefed up security at bus stops.
