Duke Power can’t control dams along the Catawba River to eliminate the
flooding, but they are trying to help control the intensity.
On Friday they closed the flood gate at the Lake Wylie Dam to manage the
17 inches of rain mother nature has dumped in the Catawba River. And
from their central operations center in uptown they continue to monitor
the water as it travels down river.
The flow is managed with a series of 11 dams, which is like a series of
11 bathtubs.
"As you manage the water coming into one bathtub you can only have it
get so full till it overflows when it overflows it goes into the next
bathtub. What we're trying to do is minimize or mitigate the impact of
the levels of those bathtubs,” said one Duke representative.
The impact he's referring to is for those who live along the river.
Some have been evacuated and many are dealing with flooding.
