Don’t Be A Victim: Motorcycle safety 7:31 AM

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- North Carolina motorcycle deaths are rising. So far this year, 79 people have died from motorcycle crashes. Last year's number for the entire year was just 74.
A few extra steps may be the difference between life and death.
“A 17-year-old kid pulled out in front of me. I landed in a plowed field, broke 22 bones and was in the hospital for two weeks.”
Robert Scott can remember several close calls. He’s ridden a motorcycle for more than 40 years. He helps to run Iron Horse Motorcycles.
When he sells someone a bike, he stresses safety.
“If you’re comfortable with the bike you’re riding in, it’s going to be safer on the road,” he said.
Nationally, more than half of motorcycle crashes involve another vehicle.
That's why you should anticipate other drivers making mistakes -always look for a safe place to make a quick turn and always be prepared to stop quickly.
Protective clothing is a must. You should wear a full-face helmet, long pants, shoes, boots and gloves.
Concrete and asphalt aren't very forgiving on your body.
Scott says to think of the gear as insurance.
“A $200 jacket can save you thousands in a hospital. The same with a helmet,” said Scott.
And make sure your helmet fits properly by making sure it fits snug with little movement from side to side.
And look into a safety class with your local bike shop or the DMV.
