Grits Capitol of the World

ST. GEORGE, S.C. -- Those are mighty big words: Grits capitol of the world. That’s chest thumping on a global scale. And I don’t have any reason to doubt the good people of St. George, South Carolina, I just always wonder how that fact was determined.

I could get into the what-fors and where-tos but I won’t. I accept St. George’s claim at face value.

And I could try to wax poetic here and spin this into a true yarn, but frankly, there’s only one reason I went to St. George, so I might as well cut to the chase. Once a year in this small southern town 50 miles this side of Charleston, people line up for chance to jump belly first into an enormous pool of grits.

Yes. Grits. Pool. Belly flops. Followed by deep belly laughs.

It’s the only place I know of where you can see that particular sporting event. That’s pretty much all I need to say. Check out the video and visit their Web site and go see it in person next year. Heck, sign up and you too can be a "grits diver!"
