Man robbed, carjacked in his driveway
06:13 PM EDT on Wednesday, October 15, 2008
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Thieves robbed a man in his own driveway on Tuesday night and then stole his car.
"It's shocking,” said Julie Eiselt, founder of Neighbors for a Safer Charlotte.
It happened at about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday along Sedley Road in the Foxcroft neighborhood of south Charlotte.
Police say a man pulled into his driveway and was ambushed by three men. One of them had a gun.
"The fact is, it was a very brazen, random crime and it could be anybody's neighborhood at an hour of the night when people are coming in to their homes, coming to their driveway, getting out of their car and thinking they can get out of their car and go into their house without being held up by men with guns," said Eiselt.
Officers say the robbers had stocking masks on their heads. They took the victim’s wallet, his keys and then drove off in his car.
An e-mail was sent to neighbors by Foxcroft Watch, warning them of what happened.
“I saw the e-mail on it,” said Dr. Glenn Woolf, a Foxcroft resident.
He says this kind of crime is out of the norm around here.
“We've had some robberies in the neighborhood. We’ve had break-ins but no blatant hold-up of this sort that I'm aware of," said Woolf.
There’s not much of a description of the suspects, but police say they stole a gray 2002 Volkswagen Passat with North Carolina license plate XVA-4629.
Matthews police are also looking at this case to see if may be related to two similar ones in their jurisdiction.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
