CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- For the second time in as many months, Mecklenburg leaders Wednesday delayed a decision on property revaluation.

The county’s tax assessor is scheduled to begin evaluating the current tax value of all Mecklenburg property, a process that normally occurs every six years.

Mecklenburg Commissioner Karen Bentley has suggested postponing the revaluation for another year over amid concerns that most homeowners would see higher property tax bills after the new assessment.

Bentley, a Republican, first suggested the idea last month but failed to win the support of Democratic commissioners.

Commission Chairperson Jennifer Roberts said while 90-percent of Mecklenburg homeowners could see their property’s assessed tax value increase, she believes Commissioners will adjust the county’s tax rate to offset the potential impact on property taxes,

Commissioners could still delay the revaluation until 2010, Roberts said Wednesday night, adding she was still examining the issue.

The board is scheduled to discuss the tax assessment schedule on December 2.
