Tax-free appliance details
This is the first tax-free weekend in North Carolina for Energy Star-qualified products.
The holiday will be repeated annually beginning on the first Friday in November and ending the following Sunday. Unlike the state's school supplies sales tax holiday, there is no price threshold.
Items that are included are products that meet the Energy Star requirements and are authorized to carry the Energy Star label, including clothes washers, freezers, refrigerators, central air conditioners, room air conditioners, air source heat pumps, geothermal heat pumps, ceiling fans, dehumidifiers and programmable thermostats.
Dishwashers are not included.
Most appliance retailers also are planning sales.
NOTE: Lowe's and Home Depot are giving an additional 10 percent Veteran's Day discount to members of the military and veterans.
RALEIGH, N.C. -- Consumers who want to save energy will get a chance to save money as well in North Carolina.
The first annual Energy Star Sales Tax Holiday is scheduled for the weekend and is set to begin on Friday.
The three-day tax holiday was created to help consumers save energy and money while demonstrating environmental stewardship and increasing consumer awareness about energy efficiency.
Appliances eligible under the tax holiday include clothes washers, freezers and refrigerators, central and room air conditioners, air-source heat pumps, ceiling fans and programmable thermostats. Dishwashers are not included and appliances purchased for a business aren't included either.
During the 2008 session of the General Assembly, lawmakers approved the creation of the appliance tax holiday to encourage the use of more energy efficient products.
