Drug suspects arrests in Belmont

BELMONT, N.C. -- NewsChannel 36 cameras followed Belmont police officers on Tuesday morning as they made more than two-dozen drug arrests.

Fifteen people are facing a total of 110 drug-related charges.

Officers say they are familiar with some of the suspects and they know a few might cause some problems for them.

They hoped by setting out early in the morning they would catch the people at home. The plan worked in many cases.

"Get out of my face," said one female suspect to our camera as she was arrested.

Before sunrise, two teams of officers went to the homes of 26 suspected drug dealers.

"We have to do this. It's not going to stop it but it's going to slow it down," said Lt. Basil Marett with the Belmont Police Department.

If the suspect was home, police searched their home and placed them under arrest.

"I didn't do nothing. This is not right," said a woman while being placed in a patrol car.

Cocaine, marijuana, prescription drugs -- these suspects face a total of 110 criminal charges.

"They are not a good influence on other people and it’s a big relief for everybody knowing that they are behind bars right now," said neighbor Saeed Ahmad.

For police, the bust wasn't just about drugs. It's also about other crimes.

Marett says drug users will often steal to fund their drug habit. Sometimes "breaking into cars so they can get an item to sell it to get money for drugs," he said.

Officers arrested one mother suspected of selling drugs to support her four children.

"Most of these people have families, have kids, and they’re trying to make money to take care of their kids," said Marett.

In all, police rounded up 15 of their 26 suspects Tuesday.

Belmont Police Chief David James calls that a successful operation, which sends a clear message to criminals in the community.
