CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Another Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools teacher is one-step closer to being fired because of controversial comments posted on the social networking site Facebook.
The district’s employee relations division has recommended that CMS Superintendent Peter Gorman fire two teachers following a NewsChannel 36 I-Team report.
The first teacher recommended for dismissal had posted on her Facebook profile that she works “at the most ghetto school in Charlotte,” and described her students as “chitlins.”
The most recent teacher who faces dismissal wrote on Facebook, “I hate my students.”
Gorman has indicated that would likely fire both teachers.
CMS Spokesperson Nora Carr said during a press conference Tuesday that if an employee can’t be seen as a role model, they shouldn’t be teaching.
“It’s very, very important to maintain that professional credibility when you are in a position of authority, when you are taking care of other people’s children,” said Carr. "It's really not a matter of free speech. It's a matter of professional judgment or the lack thereof."
If and when Gorman makes a final decision to fire the two teachers, the teachers would have the option to appeal that decision with the school board.
In all, seven school district employees have faced disciplinary action because of content they posted on Facebook. Four of the seven employees are teachers.
“It ranges from short of suspension to suspension with pay,” Carr added.
CMS already fired an after school programs employee for posting the “n” word in his on-line profile.
