Teen killed by police was shot in back 10:09 AM
10:09 AM EST on Tuesday, December 11, 2007
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The gunshot fired by police that killed 16-year-old Laquan Brown entered through the side of the teen’s back, according to an autopsy report.
The Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner’s report says the bullet entered through the left side of his back and continued to the right, upward and forward.
The toxicology report also shows there was no alcohol in Brown’s system.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police have said Brown was shot after running from two officers who were responding to a reported robbery at an apartment complex off Albemarle Road on Nov. 4
Initial calls to 911 reportedly were of a group of Hispanic males possibly robbing an individual there. When police arrived, the officers said Brown took off in the opposite direction.
Authorities say he was seen carrying a gun, repeatedly ignored verbal commands to stop and then raised one hand seconds before the fatal shots were fired.
But our news partners at The Charlotte Observer have previously reported that a source close to the investigation said the teen was holding a cell phone, not a gun, when he was shot; and that a weapon found at the scene was 20 feet from Brown’s body.
WCNC spoke with a family member of Brown's who declined to go on camera but said, "We'll leave it in God's hands. The truth will come out."
