Windy weather closes Grandfather Mountain

BLOWING ROCK, N.C. -- Wind gusts up to 105 mph were recorded at Grandfather Mountain on Wednesday, and a wind advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m.

The strong winds forced officials to keep Grandfather Mountain closed on New Year's Eve.

The Watauga County Sheriff's Office says the gusts have toppled over some trees and set off a few burglar alarms at residences and businesses.

No injuries have been reported.

A wind advisory means that winds of 35 mph or gusts over 45 mph are expected. Winds that strong can make driving difficult.

"We were coming up the mountain and we got several gusts moving the truck sideways," said George Greene, who was driving Wednesday morning in Blowing Rock. "We came around the corner, a big gust about moved the truck off the road."

Tourists at Blowing Rock experienced gusts around 60 mph.

A cold front approaching from the west is to blame for the windy conditions, which are expected to continue through the early evening.

High temperatures for Wednesday will be in the low 50s. If you're heading outside for your New Year's Eve festivities, make sure to dress in layers. Temperatures will dip into the mid to upper 20s for lows Wednesday night.
