Coaches turned away because of faith, some say 5:35 PM

If your child plays sports, chances are you've heard of "CHAMP,” a program for children of different Christian denominations to get together and play ball.
But now some parents told 6NEWS if a person is Catholic, they can't coach. The soccer season is just about to kick off and some parents say the league is out of bounds.
CHAMP, Calvary Church's faith based sports program, allows kids and coaches of Christian faiths to play ball. Now there are concerns that coaches, who are Catholic, will have to take to the sidelines.
“It's kind of inconceivable that they would think a Catholic is unfit to coach a soccer team,” said Gail McMillan, whose kids play for CHAMP.
McMillan said a friend of hers was not allowed to coach because he's Catholic.
“I called the director of the sports program and said I heard this rumor and I can't possibly believe it's true. He did indicate to me that it, unfortunately, was true,” said McMillan.
When she asked why, McMillan said she was told, “That there were inconsistencies with the Catholic religion that would make it difficult for a Catholic to be in a leadership position and I was floored.”
6NEWS spoke to Tim Hathaway, one of Calvary’s associate pastors, who said it's all a "miscommunication."
“We are not anti-Catholic,” said Hathaway. “There are coaches who are Catholic who were turned away. I believe a couple of those do not meet our criterion for as I have explained to you, you know salvation and presenting the gospel, just as we would turn away any coach who did not meet that criterion.”
McMillan said her friends have pulled their kids out of the program, and she may do the same next year.
Hathaway said two or three of the program’s more than 200 coaches were turned away.
Calvary still encourages people who are Catholic to apply. The coaching application asks for the applicants church affiliation. Several churches on that list are Catholic.
