Elderly men found in home died of apparent murder-suicide

Two 74-year-old men were found dead inside their home Wednesday afternoon and police say they died of unnatural causes.

LENOIR, N.C. -- Two 74-year-old men were found dead inside a home on Thursday.

On Wednesday, October 19, police were alerted that two individuals were dead inside a residence. Upon arrival, police found Johnny Ben Church and Gwyn Lee Kirby.

"The results of this investigation, thus far, overwhelmingly indicate this was an incident of murder/suicide," the Lenoir Police Department said Friday. "At this point there is no indication that this was a random act, or that a third party was involved."

Church and Kirby were both sent for a medical autopsy.

A man who lives across the street said his grandparents lived in the home, and Church was his grandfather. He said both Church and Kirby are related, and he added that his family just wanted answers.

The State Bureau of Investigation is assisting in the investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Lenoir Police Department at 828-757-2100.
