Wrong-way driver identified in fatal crash

ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. -- Authorities have identified a moped driver who was killed in a wrong-way, head-on collision on Thursday.

The North Carolina Department of Public Safety says Faustino Lopez, of Charlotte, was killed in a crash on US 70 between Salisbury and Cleveland on Thursday.

Troopers say Lopez was traveling west in the eastbound lanes of US 70 on his moped when he struck a Buick, driven by Salisbury resident Jerry Earnhardt, head-on.

Authorities say Lopez was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

DPS has not yet said how Lopez ended up on the wrong side of the highway.
